You know how sometimes TV shows have those stupid clip shows to fill time between new episodes? Or how bands sometimes release an EP in between full length albums that is just old songs done in a different way (like acoustic or live)? Well, now I understand why. Sometimes you just can't get something new out, but you want the people to have something new to look at - even if it is only semi-new.
I don't have anything new to post right now, but I thought this comment was worth its own post. It's from the "The Infamous Contract with America" post and was in response to an anonymous comment that said, "Too bad that the entire Contract was a lie. The fools gained power and then threw all of their promises away. Now they are beholden to the big money & corporate interests. The Repubs don't serve us. They serve the big corporations that give them so much wealth. "

It's true that they have violated their own contract, which is just plain wrong. But to use the tired old 'beholden to big money...' line implies that Democrats aren't. The people running big corporations aren't stupid. They donate to both parties. They need leverage regardless of who wins.
Also, big corporations need constant income, or else they would become small corporations. They get that income from people like us by providing goods and services that we want at prices we are willing to pay. This is tough for many liberals to accept, but these corporations need to make us happy or they won't get our money. This makes them accountable to us in a real sense.
Being 'beholden to big business' is still better than being beholden to big unions and lawyers goups, as the Democrats in Washington are (that's in addition to big business don't forget). The only thing I see from those groups are higher prices goods, lower quality, and frivolous lawsuits. There's something to strive for!

I'm not trying to defend the republicans. In fact, the in the first line I said they violated their own contract and that it's wrong.
I think they should be voted out in the next Republican primary because they broke their promises.
My point was that Republicans are not alone in being beholden to their big donors. Two wrongs don't make a right. No defense, just a counterpoint.
As for the 'Perfect Republican logic' remark, I'm not trying to equate Democrats and Republicans. The Republicans broke their contract. The Democrats never made a contract.
Once again, the bottom line is that they both are beholden to their big donors. Except that big business serves its own self-interest by providing goods and services that people want. Unions and Lawyers serve their self interests by getting more money for their members/clients than they could otherwise get for themselves (Unions also make it difficult to fire bad employees), which often ends up costing the rest of us more in the form of higher prices for goods and services.

Funny didn't take Martha Rainville long to take money from Delay and the Tobacco companies.
This Anonymous contributer sure is angry. I wonder where he or she got the idea that the only people who cowtow to big corporations are the republican party. They obviously don't know much about a little practice known as Lobbying.
I agree with Mr. Optimizer that both sides are suspect - but that unions and lawyers provide only a limited service to a select few (and end up costing everyone more in the event of big, useless lawsuits). Versus corporations who provide services for everyone. And even "pure as the driven snow" liberals are *gasp* consumers.
