Compassionate Cause for March 2007

You might have noticed that I did not feature a Compassionate Cause this month.

This month, my extra giving was done to a person that I know instead of to a faceless organization. As important as it is to give to organizations that help those in need, we must not forget that we have friends and neighbors all around us who have needs, too.

This month (yes, I know it is almost over), I encourage you to do something to bless a friend or neighbor. It does not take much to show someone that you care about them.

I will be back next month (next week) with another spotlight organization that needs your support.

(I hope that didn't sound too preachy. I'm just trying to do my part to make the world a better place.)

Compassionate Cause for February 2007

The She's Right Compassionate cause for February is Prajwala.

In the beginning of January, I saw the profile of Sunitha Krishnan on PBS's Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. I highly recommend that you watch the video or read the transcript of the interview with this amazing woman.

Krishnan began working to combat sexual violence in what she says is its most pervasive form -- prostitution. After getting a doctorate in social work, she and a Catholic brother, who died in 2005, founded Prajwala, which means "eternal flame." It is dedicated to removing -- she says rescuing -- women from brothels. It begins with helping their children. In 1995 she started a school with five children. Today, aside from this boarding school for HIV positive kids, Prajwala runs 17 schools across the city of Hyderabad with 5,000 children.

Compassionate Cause for January 2007

The She's Right Compassionate Cause for January is Blood:Water Mission.

This group is "committed to clean blood and clean water to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic, to build clean wells in Africa, to support medical facilities caring for the sick, to make a lasting impact in the fight against poverty, injustice and oppression in Africa through the linking of needs, talents and continents, of people and resources."

Currently, they are working on the 1000 Wells Project.

The Compassionate Conservative

A new month. A new template. A new monthly feature on She's Right.

Liberals are always squawking about how conservatives don't care about the poor, but that's just not so. Conservatives believe in people taking care of the poor, not the government.

In honor of compassionate conservatives everywhere, every month, I will post a new She's Right Conservative Cause - a non-profit organization that cares for our needy neighbors.

What you do with this information is up to you.

This month's Compassionate Cause is the Burlington Emergency Shelter.

The Burlington Emergency Shelter does not receive state or federal funds, so they rely on the generosity of caring people like you.

If money is not something you can spare, there are also volunteer opportunities.

We are always looking for volunteers to provide meals for our guests (enough to feed 25 people). A meal consists of a main dish, a side dish, a bread product, 2 gallons of a beverage, and a dessert. Get together with your friends, neighbors or co-workers and help provide a meal for the Shelter!

And for a fun way to help the homeless, you can volunteer at the Helping Hands Gift Wrap at the University Mall!
